Forbes Posts Top 10 Up-And-Coming Tech Cities
Saturday, March 22nd, 2008Forbes had an interesting list of the top 10 up-and-coming Tech Cities. The list was complied by Philip Auerswald a professor of public policy from George Mason University. The list has many unexpected results because it is measuring up-and-coming cities, not necessarily cities that are already well known for their technology innovations.
The list looked at ‘up and coming technologies’ such as nano-crystals, quantum dots, polymers and plastics, advanced materials, cell microbiology, and micro-systems. Many experts believe these fields accurately represent the future of innovation in America.
The way the data was measured used a method pioneered by intellectual-property valuation researcher Anthony Breitzman. Auerswald found patents filed within the fields he was searching and then used only the most relevant patents by ranking them according to the number of other patents that source it. The more important an invention of process is the more patents there are that source it. The more of these high ranking patents that a city produced the higher rank it received on his list. The results might surprise you,
1) Columbus, Ohio
2) Santa Fe, N.M
3)Palm Beach County, Fla
4) Houston, TX
5) Milwaukee, Wis
6) Pittsburgh, Pa
7) Boise City, Idaho
Iowa City, Iowa
9) Lake Charles, La
10) Yuma, Ariz
